ArkDes

For a period of three weeks as part of the course digital design at Berghs school of communication we worked with ArkDesk, Sweden's national centre for architecture and design. They wanted a digital solution that enhance the visitors experience at the museum.

We presented a digital tool, a container, to use as a part of building exhibitions. The curator decides what to fill it with, depending on the kind of exhibition or specific work of art. We presented them with an AR-app (Augmented Reality). By using AR-technology, the app knows where in the exhibition the visitors are, and shows them additional information about the artwork in front of them.

User research & strategy

Interviews & discussion with ArkDes: They strive to be a cutting edge museum, they want to deepen the relationship with visitors and strengthen the identity and awareness of ArkDes.

The selection of the target audience: The target audience was divided into different segments based on needs, interests and motivations. The segment we and ArkDes wanted to focus on is stimulation segment group.

The stimulation segment group are:
Between 16–64 years.
Active
Experimental and early adopters
Contemporary
Like to discover new things
Know more about the exhibition
Want to be the first with new technology
Willing to share

(Based on an extensive awareness survey done in 2017 by Morris Hargreaves McIntyre).

Survey, Interviews and observations: To learn what the target audience wanted from a digital solution. We did a survey on Facebook and several interviews with visitor at ArkDes. 70% of the respondents were willing to download an app that is connected to ArkDes and their exhibitions.

Ideation, wireframing & prototyping

To priorities the features of the app we divided the features into different sections; before, during and after the visit. Some features are must-haves from the start and some can be developed further down the process.

We also tested if the design should include icons or only words and after asking the visitor at the museum the  answer showed “yes, I want icons”.
